AC freezing up!

Postby Billo » Thu Sep 11, 2014 11:36 pm

I installed a 12BTU AC reverse heat unit in my St tropez and only on hot days this summer it will not keep up with selected temp and then freeze up like a block of ice?

Does the breaker trip? Hopefully you put the circuit via the breaker/switch box, If not you may damage the unit. Take a look at the drainage tube maybe it's not draining properly, tube clogged, and/or the intake pump filter is dirty/clogged. Both are/should be located under the floor boards

I think I did not cut a big enough air intake opening for the condenser to get cabin air.

The size of the intake is less important than the vents going out. You should have a minimum of three vents and the further from the unit the better

I have a 89 Gran sport and had the same problem when my ac was replaced. The installer attached the air duct to the back wall blocking the air flow to the unit, I simply cut it off of the wall and moved the flexible duct forward (my sits in the vee birth under the bed) had no problem after I did that, all summer long and I live in Arizona.

Two things make the AC ice up, insufficient air flow and low freon charge. 1st, check if there are any air flow restrictions, such as a plugged air filter. 2nd, have freon charge level checked.
