Trailer maintenance

Postby pauldmurray » Mon Jul 01, 2019 1:09 am

Hello, I'm new to boating. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have regarding trailer maintenance, like how often I need to have the bearings serviced on the tandem trailer that came with my 1997 Eclipse. One of the black caps that cover the center cap recently departed. Are those necessary?

Yes there necessary, It's important to keep water from getting to the wheel bearings so they should be at least checked every 3 months or so and repacked as necessary, a lot of people use bearing buddies and like them so maybe that's a good way to go. Really it depends on how much use the trailer gets. Don't forget to check the lights, brakes if it has them, lube the coupler and clean the bunks

Depends on where you live, here on the west coast of Fl there are hundreds of trailer places, Me I do my own, then again my trailer is used very sparingly

I check grease in hubs every other trip. Or every trip. Reason if a seal goes and you wash out grease you got problems. This is in saltwater fresh water not as bad.
