2001 wellcraft 24 wa engine size

Postby vital04 » Wed Apr 21, 2021 10:09 am

Question for you all.. I have seen a lot of well craft 24 wa's repower from a 225 stroke to a 200 4 stroke. Just curious of other wellcraft 24 WA's owners engine size and for those that have the 200 4 stroke how does the boat perform? Seems the 200's you loose about 400 cc's. Whats your normal cruising? Does the boat feel sluggish after moving from a 225 to a 200..?

I have a 1997 Wellcraft Excel 23 WA with a 1997 200hp Mercury (Carb'd). I believe it is a very similar if not the same hull (See pics attached). It seems that 200hp is what is common on these which seems underpowered to me and am curious to know why anyone would step down from a 225 (Weight maybe??). I have read where some people have issues with water coming over the transom so weight can be an issue with a 4 stroke on these. I do not seem to have an issue with that but have not been offshore in it yet... I will say that mine does take a while to plane w/ a 17p 3 blade prop, especially when loaded but once it gets up it runs up to 43mph. Just bought a 4 blade 15p prop but have not run it yet but plan to run it soon and will let you know how it works out. I'd like to hear more about this myself...

No problem... I'd like to know how the weight of a 200 or 225 4 stroke worked out on one of these models...

Seems like the more I search the more I find 200's off the back of the 24 rather then 225. The 225 optimax comes in at about 520 LB's and say something like a 200 susuki comes in at 583 LBS. But, the susuki 200 is a 4 cylinder and the the optimax 225 is a 6 cylinder. The susuki 225 weights a little bit more but does not come with fly by wire controls only mechanical.

My 1997 2 stroke weighs 398 but would want more power unless this new 4 blade 15p works out... We'll see...

I ran the new prop... Much better!
With a 1/2 tank of gas and 5 people (In the back of the boat) it got on plane much better than before and RPM's ran up to about 5600. Max on this motor is 5800. I do not plan to have 5 people on the boat very often at all but its nice to know that I can. Next test will be with 2-3 people & a full tank. More testing needed but so far so good...
