Coastal 290 - cabin hatch gas pistons

Postby joeyd3 » Fri Jun 06, 2014 1:22 pm

Hi all, I just bought an 05 Coastal 290 and I'm fixing a few items on her. What is the function of the 2 pistons that support the top hatch when going down into the cabin? Should the hatch be held in the "up" position to give more headroom for the stairs? Or is it to stop the hatch from slapping in rough seas? Or is it to add assistance when manually pushing the hatch up to walk down the stairs?

I replaced the pistons with new ones and they don't seem to add any functionality at all, doesn't hold the hatch off the deck nor do they really stop slapping, and the hatch is not heavy enough to require assistance. So either I got the wrong gas pressure or this is a useless design.

Thx
