Re: 1989 2800 Coastal Rudder Repair
After seeing how the rudder was held in place, we purchased a 1.25 dia split clamp collar to put on top of the nut on the stuffing box. this will replace the holding clamp the needs to be replace up top.
Next we remove the link arm, then the pivot arm that is keyed. so if you don't adjust the link arm it will go back on and be the same rudder alignment as before.
remove the brass clamp collar and all screws holding the board in place. Lift the board and bearing up and off. Now you need to make a new board. the bearing hole was 1.75 so we got a hole saw to that size. we used the old board as a templete and painted with marine grade paint. put everything back, then become the hard part of the job. the bearing is a solid brass bushing and the board must be shimmed so the rudder rotate smoothly, ours had a .25 thick wood shim on one side. we replace that with Stainless Steel Washer. All works great
don't forget to take the split collar.
