1988 Gran sport motor rotation

Postby RMO » Sat Oct 16, 2021 8:43 am

I have 1988 Gran sport , needing repower , trying to determine if these motors are counter rotating or same or, does the transmission change the rotation, also looking to find out what transmission is actually in this boat , thanks.

1988 was the last year for counter rotating engines, mine are indicated on valve cover label. You can also start the engine and watch rotation or have someone crank and you watch. Standard rotation engines are reversed in the transmission. I have a st tropez with big blocks my trans model is 10-05-000-011. 1.51:1 ratio , mine is an 88 with counter rotating engines.

Another method to check for counterrotating engine would be the firing order

St Tropez is an awesome boat, plenty of space bu small enough for the woman and I to handle alone. She’s a thirsty gal though ⛽️

On the counter rotating engine, the hoses going into the raw water pump are reversed. This is very apparent if you can view both engines side by side.

Not understanding your reply, so the engines are counter rotating but, the trans reverses them? Or are they the same standard rotation and the trans just reverses one???
