Ignition question on Mercruiser 470

Postby AeroNautical » Sat Jun 29, 2019 1:02 pm

I have a 1986 192 American with the Mercruiser 3.7L i4 (dreaded Merc 470). I recently picked it up out of someone's backyard and am trying to bring her back to life. I've been having issues with the ignition and trouble shot plugs, wires, coil and all came back operational. I was working with the distributor cap and everything appeared clean and unbroken...thats when I discovered a wire not connected. A picture is attached, it is a black wire, assuming negative/ground, coming off the back of thr distributor. This motor has been upgraded with a single wire alternator and I'm not sure of this black wire is my ignition issue or if it's leftover from when it had the original charging system. If it does need to be connected, is it any grounding point or someplace specific?

Thank you in advance!

Follow up in case anyone reads this. Ignition problem was solved with new distributor tune up kit. I replaced the cap, rotor, condenser, points and put in a new coil while I was at it. After I solved the ignition problem, I discovered I had a carb/fuel problem. That will be another topic here shortly...
