Overpowering a 1991 coastal 236 by 30 hp

Postby outkast » Sun Aug 11, 2019 4:04 am

Hi all. I'm trying to decide between repowering my coastal 236 with a Yamaha 250 , or 300. The capacity plate says it's rated for 270 max hp. I'm leaning towards the 300 because it's pretty much the same weight as the 250, and it's fuel economy is nearly identical. I figure it would be nice to have plenty of punch in heavy seas. My concern is whether or not I should be worried about over stressing the transom. My current setup is a Yamaha 2.8 200. Boat has a 2' metal offshore bracket. Does an offshore bracket increase the strength of the transom at all?

Just the opposite, larger HP more Torque, more strain on the transom
