Fuel regurgitation when filling up

Postby The LA Professor » Tue Jun 29, 2021 10:22 pm

When filling up with fuel, the gas comes shooting back out after about 2 gallons put in. Was told this might be a blocked fuel vent. Where is that, and how do I fix it?

Man, I'm gonna have so many more questions if this goes well. It's a "new-to-me" 1997 Wellcraft Excel WA that is in great shape, but has a lot of "little things".

It is either built into your fuel cap or it is beside the fuel cap ( just a little round thing with a hole in it) Back in the day they used both types. If it's the kind built into the fuel fill cap then there is no fix that I know of when fueling except to put the fuel in slower

Check down in the neck of the fuel hole, just below where the fuel cap goes in. There should be an opening, this is your vent. You may have to use some type of tool to insure it is open. You may have to get to your tank, find the vent hose, the smaller one of course going into the tank, disconnect it and blow some compressed air into it. Keep in mind the debris is going to blow out if there is some.

I have the same issue with my 05 180 fisherman. Going to track down the vent this weekend.

So, checked my fuel neck - no vent that I can see. Guess I'm just going to have to schedule a few hours to fill 'er up?

You can check the top of your fuel tank to see if the is a nipple that might be blocked off. Maybe someone never put it in or removed it, seams strange there's no vent

I have a 1992 20 Fish and my vent cap is next to the fill port just under the rub rail. Has a SS cover with opening facing down.

If there is a vent fitting near the fill port / on the outside of the hull, there is a screen inside the fitting discharge. Not uncommon to have that screen plug up from age or mud daubers / wasps love to make their home in them. If the screen gets plugged, the tank vent is inoperable and will cause the fill line to burp back when filling.

Check to make sure the screen is free of blockage.

Also, the fuel tank vent hose going to the fitting (5/8" hose) should have a loop in the hose near the fitting. Make sure the loop isn't kinked.
