removing some color stripes

i have an '88 Gran Sport that i am updating. In those days the hull paint jobs were pretty colorful! Mine sometimes gets called the Barney Boat because of some of the shades of red (approaching purple) on it. Has anyone tried to remove some of the coloring? I understand that it is paint rather than tinted gel coat. I have heard of using oven cleaner, but I don't want to melt whats underneath!! Any other suggestions?

If it's paint then I think that's going to need at least wet sanded down then buffed out or repainted, I don't think your going to get it to the white base coat, but I have been wrong before it's just that stuff like oven cleaner may do more damage than good

I had the same issue, Maroon stripes down the sides that faded and gave the boat a bit of a carnival look. I was able to remove them using a rubber wheel on a electric drill. It took 2 wheels and no damage to the gelcoat. Came back w/ 3M restorer and buffed. It definitely took some work but the results are a much cleaner looking boat.
