Horizon 500 Windlass Lewmar - Rebuild

Postby MattMan » Thu May 05, 2016 12:05 am

The old Anchor Windlass ain't what it used to be!

Time to rebuild!

Removing the old windlass from the bow access panel, is attached through the deck with 3 posts / 10 mm lock nut. Make sure you pull the anchor chain and rode in before beginning.

Remove the screw with hex heads disassembles the shell from the main housing. I cleaned all the old gasket material off the seal tracks. Removing the main shaft, gypsy and gears is best done, by using the exploded parts view on the Horizon 500 parts list. You will be doing the reverse of this when done.

I ordered a new flemming/stripper, control arm, pivot pin as mine were worn out. Some of the parts are no longer available as this is an older windlass. With all of the gears off, I polished the rust off with Marine 31 polish cutting compound. I soaked the corrode bolts in some CLR overnight.

Painting: I did strip all original of the parts off the 3 part housing (Leaving the race/rubber seal in the middle for the mainshaft). The original white paint had flaked off and seen better days. The horizon 500 label badge was sun faded.I took them to a body shop and had them paint the housing with metallic silver, and clear coat for a new look, under $50.00

Chrome Plating: The gypsy NEW can be really expensive. If yours is still in good shape, but chrome flaked off....replate it! I used Dallas Plating in...Dallas GA. and they rechromed the gypsy for an affordable $35.00. Looked great.

Now with all of my parts painted, and cleaned...follow the exploded parts view to reassemble, greasing with a quality marine grease as you go. Remount the Horizon 500 on your deck, making sure to put a sealant on the holes and under it. Run your anchor chain...attach your anchor and test!

"Don't mind the last pictures...had a little sealant on the housing which later wiped off"
