Bottom Painting?

How important and how often should this be done? How big of a job is it to do yourself, vs hiring it out?
Wondering if my dad's old '84 EC3100 should be repainted before it launches this spring or not!

If it sits in the water all season then maybe. I know that sounds weird but many moons ago when we lived up north and keep them at marinas in the rivers all season I would put a couple of good layers of wax on the bottom before launching and at the end of the season clean the bottom off and repeat next season. If your leaving it sit in salt or brackish water then yes paint it. If you have the ability to pull the boat once a month the maybe not(in salt or brackish water) Lots of people on salt water that have lifts or ramps on the property don't bother painting so it's what your comfortable with. as far as doing it your self it's not hard, just do the prep work

Thanks for the reply, CptBill. To be clear it has old paint on it from the last time my dad did it...likely 5 years ago or so. It sits in fresh water (great lakes) from May to October.
Trying to decide if it needs it or not this season! Any good links to share on the "how to" process?

If you wanted to paint it, it would just require a light sanding then paint
