Coastal 290 2000-2009 fuel tank

Postby Gloucesterman » Sat Apr 19, 2025 10:39 am

Greetings. I’m in the market for a used Coastal 290 in the 2000-2009 range and doing some research. One item I’m researching is the material of the fuel tanks. From what I have read Wellcraft used Plastic, Stainless or Aluminum depending on the year & batch. I’ve also read that plastic has a very short lifespan and stainless is about 20 years. Do you have any advice or experience on this topic?

My boats a 1993. I pulled the tank cover when I re-powered to evaluate the tank and change the hoses. Tank is aluminum and is in perfect condition as it was installed properly without foam. I have seen 10yr old tanks fail and 40yr old ones that are fine. All about the installation.
