Strong fuel smell at batteries and electric switch chamber

Hi folks,
I went back to check the boat (2004 220 Sportsman) after a month+ storage and noticed a strong gas smell in the chamber where batteries and electric switch were located (the one just in front of the steering wheel). I used a fan to clear the smell and started the engine. The engine hesitated but finally started and idle at around 400-500 rpm with some unburned fuel smell in the back. I shut it down after a couple minutes then it won't restart. I tried it again after 10 min sitting and there was a big loud pop backfire and engine still won't start.
Could someone point out to where could be the gas smell came from and why I am getting unburned fuel in the exhaust. The engine is a 2004 Yamaha F225.
Many thanks for your input.
