1973 Airslot Weekender

I am restoring a 1973 24' Airslot Weekender. It has a intact Mercruiser 888 stern drive... I need to know what is the most powerful / fuel efficient engine that will match up to this drive for this restoration project. What was the original engine? Should I stick with gas or go diesel? I will be fishing from and cruising with this vessel.
