Work to 1985 Nova II

Postby 80's Wellcraft » Wed Apr 29, 2015 10:46 pm

Hello Everyone. I have not posted here since my introduction last summer. Ready to hit the water as soon as the weather and work allows here in Virginia.

Got our family's new boat - the 1985 Nova II with twin Mercuiser 260's finally out last fall - put about 5 hours on her on a rare 70 degree November day here in VA. She cruised great and looking forward to more opportunities in 2015.

My father and I currently have both Mercruiser Alpha One drives removed doing some updates. Blessed to have a healthy 70 year old Dad who worked on these boats when they were new as a boat shop owner and mechanic. The trim gauges were not working upon purchase - the sender wires were toast - so pulled the drives mainly to install new senders and wiring to the trim pumps. This will have all the original Kysor-Medallion square bezel gauges working once again. One drive also leaked down slowly - trim cylinders tested okay at a friend's shop - no water in the trim fluid either. So have installed a new trim pump in hopes of fixing this - the original first generation Mercury/Mercruiser Presto-Lite pump seemed a little hard to find parts for - so we did not dig into a repair of the existing pump. Currently painting the drives, installing new decals, new belows and shift cables, and sea water pumps while things are apart. Mirage props were reworked and polished over the winter - so hope to have a good looking stern when complete.

Missed the opportunity on Craigslist this winter to purchase some Nova parts from a boat being parted out. Just slowly making this one look look better and like she did when new - anal Wellcraft owner here who is keeping a stock look. New towing cover, some upholstery upgrades, and trailer maintenance/upgrades are next steps once the drives are back on and everyhing is adjusted up. Need some parts for the cabin, came with a bimini top - but would love to find the factory top with side curtians for patterns - if anyone knows of a parts source for the ealry to mid 80's Nova II's - I would be intersted in making contact.

Some recent photos taken are apparently to large to share as attachments for this post - will work on some lower res conversions for next time. Was able to share several of the Craigslist photos when I made my introduction post - will attach one again

Update - drives painted, new decals applied, new trim pump installed on the right drive - no more leaking down. Working trim gauges and trim switches now - with trim limit and sender units installed on the drives.

Pin-stripe of the aluminum trailer with Wellcraft lettering improved the looks of the trailer - gave the boat a shine and a wax with a 3 part fiberglass restoration kit - really brought some shine to the dark gray and black colors.

Added some docking lights too. Very thankful to have an awesome Dad who has the patience and know how to make these things happen!

New SenDel aluminum trailer wheels and new tires just installed - sadly winterization completed a couple weeks ago - this boater is not ready for winter!
