Mercruiser 5.7 Efi stopped while cruising now just cranks

Postby bjt0307 » Sun Jul 23, 2017 9:51 am

I had my engine pulled in winter to replace gimble bearing. Boat ran great at 3-5 mph for a few trips. Last weekend both engines started strong, I drove about 20 miles at 3200rpm and the engine stalled when I slowed down. the next day I got it to start 1 more time first click with key both engines fired up and sounded great gauges looked good on dash. Shut off after a couple minutes and tried again and engine would just crank. I get a real low alarm that crackles in and out. Sometimes the alarm is a solid high pitch. Batteries are fully charged and I have full oil in engine. Because the engine had been pulled last year winter and it ran great I'm thinking/hoping something came loose. Could it be the ground and if so how do I find it? I have a 1998 wellcraft 3000. When alarm comes on no alarm lights display.

Sounds like it starts cold from your discipt, quits after warmed, I ddint get 2yr out my last pump vane

check fuel pump low oil pressure switch, or of course oil pressure. Fuel pump gets cut off without oil pressure.

I looked at wires and they all appear to be connected. I am no mechanic so I may have to bite the bullet and hire someone to look at it. The marina that I had pull the engine is booked and can't tell me when they can get to look at it. My gut tells me something is loose or at least I hope that's the case. When I was leaving marina someone had a similar issue with ground wire. It was connected but wasn't fit snug. Ill try to get down there this week to see if I can find where it is grounded. Thanks for all the helpful advice, I appreciate it!

I verified everything looked to be connected. I took cover off carberator and found no fuel only a drip here and there. I must have a throttle body as there are 2 areas where the fuel gets sprayed in. The video on you tube showed feel spraying in. I have nothing. Still get low oil pressure alarm after every couple turn of the key.

If the oil pressure is low the fuel pump wont come on. Id hook a mechanical gauge up and see if the motors building pressure.

Is it hard to replace low oil switch and fuel pump? I do not have tools to check pressure.

DO you know of any links or documentation that can show me how to find where oil switch/censor and fuel pump is located? I would like to start with oil switch or censor as I think that's whats causing the issue. If that does not work I will try to replace fuel pump and filter.

I went down to boat and did more troubleshooting. When I was cranking engine I noticed I had about 20 PSI of pressure. I do not hear alarm until I fire up the other engine. The alarm lights up red on STBD oil pressure. I will try to replace low oil sensor and hope that will get gas flowing again to the engine. Should I replace fuel filter and fuel pump if that does not fix it?
