Alpha, but Gen 1 or 2

Postby mrjohn544 » Sun Jul 24, 2016 12:04 pm

My 86 wellcraft monte carlo has the Alpha one stern drive... I need to buy bellows, impeller, etc.. however I do not know if it is a generation 1 or 2... how do I find this out? It's been in the water for a while it's out now but the drives are caked I can't find any stickers or anything. Any help would be appreciated

Here is a web link that discusses various Mercruiser Drives with photos - http://www.bluewatermarinesvc.com/html/ ... r_fyi.html

Not an expert on this subject - but believe an 86 boat should have been equipped with Gen 1 drive originally - our 89 Eclipse 215 with the original 5.7 Engine/Alpha One is a Gen 1.

From the link above - identifying difference between Gen 1 and 2 (without taking anything apart) is the attachment points of the power trim rams and how they attach to the drive - locking bolts verses e-clips.

No problem, look at the skeg in the bottom of the outdrive, if it is straight down behind the prop it will be a gen 1. If it has an angle from the top to the tip at the bottom toward the prop it is a gen 2. You can also tell by the way the trim rams are mounted, but the skeg is the easiest way.
