First thing to do, is find someone who knows boats WELL... have them look yours over THOROUGHLY, and see what type of service has been done recently, and figure out what hasn't been done YET. Your 1988 is a good platform, but there's plenty of things on a boat of that vintage that have been in service for years that have exceeded their expected enlistment. Drive coupler, exhaust manifolds and elbows, drive and shift cable bellows, gimbal bearing... all things that could strand you under less-than-comfortable circumstances, so get those checked out!
